Jiangmen History&Culture

During the Zhizheng period of the Yuan Dynasty (1360-1370), a commercial market was formed on the west bank of the outlet of Yishui (Xijiang River), which was called Jiangmen Market. In the 14th year of the Republic of China (1925), it was a provincial-level city. In 1970, it was downgraded to a county-level city and came under the leadership of Foshan District. In 1975, it was changed back to a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of the province. Jiangmen has a long history and profound cultural heritage. The Five Districts culture and the overseas Chinese culture are unique and charming; there are more than 5.3 million overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in 145 countries and regions around the world. It is known as the "Chinese Capital of Overseas Chinese". Jiangmen is one of the important gathering places for Cantonese people and one of the representative cities of Cantonese culture.
