The People's Republic of China, commonly referred to as China, is located in the eastern part of Asia and on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. It was founded on October 1st, 1949, with Beijing as its capital. China is a great socialist country with a long history and vast territory, composed of 56 ethnic groups.

It extends from the center of the Heilongjiang River near Mohe in the north to Zengmu Ansha in the Nansha Islands in the south. It starts from the Pamirs in the west and ends at the confluence of the Heilongjiang and Wusuli Rivers in the east. China has a land area of over 9.6 million square kilometers. The total area of China's sea areas is about 4.73 million square kilometers, and its territorial waters consist of the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea. China has a coastline of over 18,000 kilometers on its eastern and southern continents. There are more than 7,600 large and small islands distributed in China's sea areas, among which Taiwan Island is the largest, covering an area of 35,759 square kilometers.
China boasts a land border of 22,800 kilometers. It neighbors North Korea to the east, Mongolia to the north, Russia to the northeast, and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan to the northwest. To the west and southwest, it shares borders with Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and other countries. To the south, it connects with Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. The eastern and southeastern parts of China face South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia across the sea.
The Constitution of China stipulates that the administrative divisions of the People's Republic of China are as follows: (1) The country is divided into provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government; (2) Provinces and autonomous regions are further divided into autonomous prefectures, counties, autonomous counties, and cities; (3) Counties and autonomous counties are divided into townships, ethnic townships, and towns.
Municipalities directly under the central government and larger cities are divided into districts and counties. Autonomous prefectures are divided into counties, autonomous counties, and cities.
Autonomous regions, autonomous prefectures, and autonomous counties are all ethnic autonomous areas. The state may establish special administrative regions when necessary. The systems implemented within special administrative regions shall be prescribed by law enacted by the National People's Congress in accordance with specific circumstances.
As of the end of 2020, China had a total of 34 provincial-level administrative regions (including 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the central government, and 2 special administrative regions), 333 prefecture-level administrative regions, 2,844 county-level administrative regions, and 38,741 township-level administrative regions. Beijing is the capital of China.
