"Changzhi" was originally the name of the county where Lu'an Prefecture was located. It was named in 1529, the eighth year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty, and symbolizes "long-term peace and stability." In the 21st year of King Xian of Zhou (348 BC), the Kingdom of Korea first established Shangdang Commandery here. In the 26th year of King Zheng of Qin (221 BC), the Qin Dynasty unified the six kingdoms and divided the empire into 36 commanderies, one of which was Shangdang Commandery. Within the city, remains the ancient Shangdang County Office's main gate, Shangdang Gate, and the Lu'an Prefecture City God Temple, the largest existing City God Temple in China with a central axis of 408 meters. Changzhi City is a central city in southeastern Shanxi Province, a National Excellent Tourism City, a National Forest City, a National Garden City, a National Sanitary City, a Charming City with Chinese Characteristics, a Famous Chinese Quyi City, and a National Demonstration Zone for Public Cultural Service Systems. In 2019, it was again selected for inclusion in the "Top 100 Chinese City Brand Evaluation (Prefecture-Level Cities)" list. In January 2022, it was shortlisted for the National Innovative City Program. On June 7, 2022, Changzhi City and Beijing established a counterpart cooperation relationship.
