Around 50,000 to 10,000 years ago, primitive humans already lived in the Jingzhou area. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, in the first year of King Wen of Chu (689 BC), the State of Chu moved its capital to Ying (present-day Jinan City, Jingzhou District). After Qin unified the country (221 BC), it belonged to Nanjun. In the 24th year of the Yuan Dynasty's Zhizheng era (1364), it was renamed Jingzhou Prefecture and placed under the jurisdiction of Huguang Province. In the 9th year of the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty (1670), Shangjingnan Circuit was established. In the first year of the Republic of China (1911), it belonged to Jingyi Circuit. In July 1949, the Jingzhou Administrative Region Inspectorate was established. In September 1994, Jingzhou Prefecture, Shashi City, and Jiangling County were abolished, and Jingsha City was established. In November 1996, Jingsha City was renamed Jingzhou City.
