In 1928, the 17th year of the Republic of China (R.O.C.), Chahar Province was established, with Zhangjiakou as its capital. In 1952, it was incorporated into Hebei Province. Zhangjiakou, the origin of the "Zhangku Avenue," was the former capital of Chahar Province. A member of the World Olympic Cities Alliance and a host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics, it is known as the "Davos" of the East. Zhangjiakou is the intersection of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Bohai Rim) Economic Circle and the Hebei-Shanxi-Inner Mongolia (Great Wall) Economic Circle. In 1909, the first railway designed and built by Chinese people, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, was built here. On July 31, 2015, Zhangjiakou was awarded the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. That same year, a national renewable energy demonstration zone was established. Zhangjiakou was selected as one of the "2020 Famous Summer Resort Cities in China." Chongli District, Zhangjiakou City, has built seven ski resorts, including Yunding, Taiwu, and Wanlong, becoming China's largest skiing hub. The national Chongli Ice and Snow Tourism Resort was established in 2020. In 2021, the International Olympic Committee named the park "Zhangjiakou Chongli Olympic Park." The Beijing-Zhangjiakou Sports and Culture Tourism Belt was also established that year. By 2024, Zhangjiakou City's GDP is projected to reach 191.33 billion yuan.
