Sanmenxia Overview


Sanmenxia City, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, also known as Shanzhou, is located in western Henan, south of the Yellow River, at the junction of Henan, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces. Most of the city has a warm temperate continental monsoon semi-arid climate, with terrain mainly consisting of mountains, hills, and loess plateaus. It covers a total area of 9,936 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, the city administered 2 districts, 2 counties, and 2 county-level cities. As of the end of 2024, Sanmenxia City had a resident population of 2.007 million. Sanmenxia City has numerous rivers and streams, with a total of 3,107 rivers of varying sizes, belonging to the Yellow River and Yangtze River systems. In 1952, the Shanzhou Special Administrative Region merged with the Luoyang Special Administrative Region. In March 1957, the State Council approved the establishment of Sanmenxia City. In 1961, Sanmenxia City was downgraded from a prefecture-level city to a county-level city. In 1986, Sanmenxia City was upgraded back to a prefecture-level city.
