Nanping History & Culture


Nanping is one of the birthplaces of Fujian culture and a major gateway for Central Plains culture to enter Fujian. Jian'ou City, located within the area, is a provincial-level historical and cultural city with a history spanning over 1,800 years. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Jian'an County was established here, one of the first five counties established in Fujian's history. During the Tang Dynasty, Jianzhou was established, and the name "Fujian" is derived from the first characters of Fuzhou and Jianzhou. During the Song Dynasty, Jianzhou was renamed Jianning Prefecture, the earliest prefecture in Fujian's history.

Nanping is a renowned historical and cultural city in Fujian Province, boasting a history spanning over 4,000 years. It is a significant birthplace of Minyue culture, Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, and Wuyi tea culture.

Cultural Heritage

Nanping is one of the birthplaces of Fujian culture, having nurtured over 2,000 Jinshi (imperial literati) and 19 prime ministers. Zhu Xi lectured here for 50 years, earning him the reputation of "the Zou and Lu of Fujian" and "the grotto of Southern Dao." Over 150 relics of Zhu Xi's culture remain within the area, including the Zhu Xi Memorial Hall in Wuyishan and the Guangxiao Temple in Jian'ou.

Historical Figures

Zhu Xi: A Neo-Confucianist from the Southern Song Dynasty, he lectured in Nanping for 50 years and founded the "Min School." His ideas influenced China for 800 years and spread far and wide to Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Li Gang: A renowned official who fought against the Jin Dynasty, he proposed the strategy of "keeping the enemy at the border." He was later exiled to Nanping and authored works such as "Jing Kang Yao Lu." Liu Yong: A representative poet of the graceful and elegant school of the Northern Song Dynasty, he pioneered the slow lyric poetry and his masterpieces, such as "Rain and Bell," have had a profound impact.

Song Ci: A forensic scientist of the Southern Song Dynasty, author of "Xiyuan Jilu" (Washing Away Injustices), he is known as the "Father of Forensic Medicine."

Cultural Heritage

Nanping boasts over 150 national and provincial cultural relics protection sites, including Wuyi Mountain (a World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site), Jian'ou Guangxiao Temple (a National Key Cultural Heritage Site), and Shaowu Heping Ancient Town. The mother trees of the Wuyi rock tea "Da Hong Pao" are grown in Nanping, and its production process has been designated a national intangible cultural heritage site.
