Jincheng History & Culture


Jincheng City boasts a long history, with prehistoric sites such as Gaodu, Tashuihe, and Xiachuan unearthed in the last century. Established as a county during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, a prefecture during the Northern Wei Dynasty, and a prefecture during the Qing Dynasty, Jincheng boasts a thousand-year-old history. It is the birthplace of historical figures such as Liu Xisou, Li Junmin, Zhang Shenyan, Wang Guoguang, and Chen Tingjing. The city boasts numerous cultural relics and historical sites, including the Yedi Dai Temple, Qinglian Temple, Kaihua Temple, Cheng Hao Academy, the Liu Family Residence, Xiangyu Ancient Castle, the Tianguan Palace, the Imperial City Prime Minister's Residence, the Battle of Changping site, the Yangtoushan Grottoes, Xicheng Mountain, and Wangmang Ridge. Jincheng was once a coal and iron production center, known as the "Nine Heads and Eighteen Craftsmen." It is the production site of the Warring States period "Yang'a Ancient Sword," and produces high-quality Zezhou ironware and orchid charcoal. Protected areas such as Manghe and Lishan are home to rare animals such as macaques and giant salamanders, earning it the title of Shanxi's "Treasure House of Biological Resources."
