Donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao) gets its name from the former Dong'e County (now Dong'e Town, Pingyin County), where it was produced. It is made from special black donkey hides and the unique natural water of the Langxi River, and has a history of two thousand years. Li Shizhen called Ejiao a "sacred medicine" in his "Compendium of Materia Medica," and listed it as one of the three treasures of traditional Chinese medicine, along with ginseng and deer antler.
