Huhehaote Overview


Hohhot (Mongolian: ᠬᠥᠬᠡᠬᠣᠲᠠ; English: Hohhot City), abbreviated as "Hohhot," formerly known as "Guihua City," is the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and its political, economic, cultural, scientific, educational, and financial center. Located in central Inner Mongolia, on the southern side of the Daqing Mountains, it borders Ulanqab City to the east, Shanxi Province to the southeast, Ordos City to the south and southwest, and Baotou City to the west and northwest, covering a total area of 17,200 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, Hohhot administers 4 districts, 4 counties, and 1 banner. As of the end of 2024, Hohhot had a resident population of 3,639,400. Its dialect blends features of Shanxi and Shaanxi dialects.


Hohhot's terrain is predominantly mountainous and plains, with a mid-latitude continental monsoon climate characterized by long, harsh winters, short, hot summers, and drastic climate changes in spring and autumn. Major rivers within its borders include the Yellow River and the Dahei River. Hohhot boasts a history of over two thousand years. During the pre-Qin period, King Wuling of Zhao established Yunzhong County here. In 1575 (the third year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty), Alta Khan built the city of "Kukuhetun" here. The Ming Dynasty bestowed upon the city the name "Guihua." During the Republic of China era, it was renamed Guihua City. In 1954, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region People's Government renamed Guihua City to Hohhot City.


Hohhot is a key central city in North China, a national historical and cultural city, a national comprehensive transportation hub, and a regional advanced manufacturing base, as approved by the State Council. Hohhot's dairy industry cluster has been successfully selected as a national advanced manufacturing cluster. Hohhot is a national forest city, a national model city for ethnic unity and progress, a national model city for supporting the military and giving preferential treatment to families of servicemen, and a national excellent tourist city. It boasts tourism resources such as the Tomb of Wang Zhaojun, the Dayao Site, the Chulechuan Grassland Cultural Tourism Area (Hasuhai), and the Shenquan Ecological Tourism Area.
