The Nanyue Hengshan Scenic Area is located in Nanyue District, Hengyang City, with the highest peak being Zhurong Peak at an altitude of about 1300 meters. Among the "Five Sacred Mountains", Hengshan is located to the south and has relatively good climate conditions, making it lush and verdant all year round with lush trees, earning it the nickname of "the Five Sacred Mountains stand out". In the popular Chinese idiom 'Shoubi Nanshan', the term 'Nanshan' refers to Hengshan.
The Nanyue Hengshan Scenic Area mainly consists of a central scenic area and other small scenic spots. Most tourists refer to the central scenic area as "Hengshan". The "Nanyue Temple" located in Nanyue Town at the foot of Hengshan Mountain is an important scenic spot in addition to the central scenic area. It is a huge palace style ancient architectural complex in southern China, and there is a grand temple fair every year. Generally, tourists will visit the central scenic area and Nanyue Temple together.
Hengshan is a holy land of Chinese Buddhism, where the "Nanyue School" of the Southern School originated. Its teachings evolved from the Longyang School and the Linji School, and spread throughout the world. In addition, this is also a holy land for the resistance war in southern China. At the foot of Xianglu Peak, there is the "Nanyue Martyrs' Shrine" where Chinese soldiers who died on the front lines of the Anti Japanese War are enshrined and buried. You can choose to walk the entire scenic area or combine walking with eco-friendly vehicles (including cable cars). For most ordinary tourists, it is recommended to choose the latter, which will give you more energy to appreciate the beautiful scenery in the mountains and experience the cultural connotation of Nanyue.
Route Recommendation
If you choose to walk and use eco-friendly vehicles (including cable cars), visiting Hengshan in one day is not a very difficult task. You can first visit the "Nanyue Temple" in Nanyue Town, and then purchase tickets to enter the central scenic area. The basic route is: Martyrs' Shrine - Banshan Pavilion - Magu Wonderland - Mojing Terrace - Hengyang Nanyue Hengshan Scenic Area - Fuyan Temple - Nantianmen - Zhurong Peak.
If you have plenty of time, then spending two days exploring Hengshan will yield even more rewards. The general route is similar to the "one-day tour" above. Due to sufficient time, you can visit the Fuyan Temple in the Nanyue Hengshan Scenic Area of Hengyang City, and then go to the Tibetan Scripture Hall for a while, where it is extremely quiet. You can stay near Shangfeng Temple at night, so that you can go to the "Sun Watching Platform" in the early morning of the next day to watch the sunrise.
