Shenzhen Overview


Shenzhen City ("Shenzhen" for short), also known as Pengcheng, is a prefecture level city, a sub provincial city, a city specifically designated in the national plan and a megacity under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province. It is located in the south of Guangdong Province, on the east bank of the the Pearl River Estuary, near Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay in the east, near the the Pearl River Estuary and Lingding Bay in the west, connected with Xianggang Special Administrative Region in the south, and bordered Dongguan City and Huizhou City in the north. As of the end of 2024, the city has 9 districts with a total area of 1997.47 square kilometers and a permanent population of 17.9895 million.

Shenzhen is a Chinese economic special zone approved by the State Council, a national innovative city, a modern ocean city, an international comprehensive transportation hub city, a national economic center, a national advanced manufacturing base, an important carrier for opening up to the outside world, and an international science and technology innovation center. It is also a leading demonstration zone for socialism with Chinese characteristics. Shenzhen is a window of China's reform and opening up and an emerging immigrant city, creating the world-renowned "Shenzhen Speed" and known as the "Silicon Valley of China"; It is also a national logistics hub and one of the three major national financial centers in China.
