Xueqing Yunlu: Shen Congwen had a special love for water when he was a child, often playing in the water by the Tuo River. After joining the army, he basically roamed the Yuanjiang River basin. In his autobiography, he wrote countless stories about water and its surroundings. I even wrote an article titled 'The Relationship between My Writing and Water', which said, 'From the soup and flowing water, I have learned so much about human affairs, learned so much knowledge, and seen so many worlds! My imagination has expanded on this river.' 'Although I have left that river, most of the stories I write are stories by the water's edge. The articles that I am most satisfied with in my stories often use the water on the boat as a background, and the personalities of the characters in my stories are all based on the personalities of the characters I see on the boat by the water's edge...'
Shen Congwen, who loved water all his life, raised funds in the mid-1930s to build a villa in Yuanling, a gateway in western Hunan. He signed it "Yunlu", which is a homophone of his elder brother's name "Yunlu". The building is located on Huxi Mountain and faces Yuanjiang River, becoming a famous building in Yuanling City at that time. Unfortunately, it was later demolished.
Now, across from Shen Lao's tomb, we have restored a 'Yunlu', which is a deep tribute or comfort to Shen Lao!
Shen Congwen, who grew up in the ancient city of Fenghuang, has a lifelong affection for his hometown. As I grow older, tears flow uncontrollably every time I mention my hometown. He longed to return to his hometown, to the water where he played as a child. He wrote in his article "Candle Void": "I need peace and quiet, to go to a completely lonely environment to digest the concrete and abstract in life. Tingtao Mountain is such a place, backed by Nanhua, overlooking the Tuo River, welcoming the rising sun in the morning, returning to the boat at dusk, watching mandarin ducks play in the water, and listening to the surging river flow. It's a unique scenery. This should be a great destination for Shen Lao, who has been indifferent in his life and often calls himself a "rural person". And across from it is the 'Yunlu', nestled among the flowing waters, accompanied by this mountain, this water, and this house, where Shen Lao can rest peacefully.
