Shennongjia Forestry District, directly under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province, is the only administrative district in China named after a forestry district. It holds a sub-departmental-level administrative title. Located in northwestern Hubei Province, it borders Wushan and Wuxi Counties of Chongqing Municipality to the west, Zhushan and Fang Counties to the north, Baokang County to the east, and Xingshan and Badong Counties to the south, covering a total area of 3,253 square kilometers. In 2022, Shennongjia Forestry District had a permanent population of 62,900, with a registered population of 77,500. As of June 2023, Shennongjia Forestry District governed six towns and two townships.
A national nature reserve, Shennongjia Forestry District is a well-preserved pristine forest area and a key ecological functional zone. It is the first site in China to receive the "Triple Crown" designation of UNESCO as a Man and Biosphere Reserve, a Global Geopark, and a World Heritage Site. On August 7, 2018, the Hubei Provincial Government approved Shennongjia Forestry District's removal from poverty-stricken county status.
