Legend has it that Shangrao City derives its name from its "superior wealth and abundance." Historically part of the Wu region, it was established as Poyang Prefecture in 210 AD (the 15th year of the Jian'an era of the Eastern Han Dynasty). From the Tang to the Qing Dynasty, the area now encompassing Shangrao City was divided between Raozhou and Xinzhou (renamed Guangxin in the Yuan Dynasty); Wuyuan County belonged to Huizhou. In 1949, Shangrao Special District was established. In 2000, it was renamed Shangrao City. Shangrao City is one of the birthplaces of Taoism; it is the hometown of Zhu Xi, Zhan Tianyou, and Fang Zhimin, and Xin Qiji also resided here for a long period. Shangrao City has a fine revolutionary tradition, having established the Northeast Jiangxi Revolutionary Base Area; it houses the National Huizhou Cultural Ecological Protection Area (Wuyuan County). Shangrao City boasts abundant tourism resources, including four national AAAAA-level scenic areas: Sanqingshan Scenic Area, Guifeng Scenic Area, Jiangwan Scenic Area, and Huangling Scenic Area; and three World Heritage sites: Sanqingshan, China Danxia, and Wuyishan. Wuyuan County in Shangrao City has been designated as a national demonstration zone for all-for-one tourism.
