Jiaozhou Bay has been a key port in northern China since the Tang and Song dynasties. In 1891, the Qing government stationed troops there and established Jiaozhou Bay. In 1897, Germany leased the port and constructed a railway, leading to its prosperity thanks to the "One Port, One Road" initiative. In 1930, the city was renamed Qingdao City. Following its liberation, Qingdao became a prefecture-level city in Shandong Province. In 1981, Qingdao was designated one of China's 15 economic centers, and in February 1994, it was designated one of China's 15 sub-provincial cities.
