Luoyang, abbreviated as "Luo," was formerly known as the Divine Capital, Luoyi, Chengzhou, and Luojing. It is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, a World Cultural City, one of the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities, a National Regional Center City, a sub-center city of the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration, a key node city in the Belt and Road Initiative, a sub-center city in Henan Province, and a renowned tourist city. It will be included in the list of second-tier cities in 2025.
Luoyang is located in western Henan Province, straddling the north and south banks of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. It borders Zhengzhou to the east, Sanmenxia to the west, Pingdingshan and Nanyang to the south, and Jiyuan and Jiaozuo to the north. It covers a total area of 15,230 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, it has jurisdiction over seven urban districts, seven counties, and two national-level development zones. Its permanent population is expected to be 7.081 million at the end of 2024.
