Overview
Lhasa, which means "Holy Land" in Tibetan, is the capital city of the Xizang Autonomous Region, the political, economic, cultural, scientific and educational center of Xizang, and the holy land of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located in the southeast of central Xizang, on the north bank of Lhasa, a tributary of the the Yarlung Zangbo River. The terrain generally inclines from east to west, with an average elevation of 3650 meters. It is an ancient city with a history of 1300 years.
Lhasa may be a destination that you can only visit once in your lifetime, or it may be one of the few distant places that you want to visit again. The magnificent Potala Palace, the night view of Yaowang Mountain, the kneeling monks of Jokhang Monastery and Jokhang Monastery, the delicious Tibetan food on Bako Street, the garden murals of Norbulingka, the scripture debate venues of Ganden Temple, Sera Temple and Drepung Temple, and the bustling annual Sheraton Festival are all unique expressions and life in Lhasa.
