Anyang Overview


Anyang City, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, was formerly known as Xiangzhou and Zhangde, and abbreviated as Yin and Ye. Located in the northernmost part of Henan Province, it borders Henan, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces. It is bordered by Changzhi City to the west, Puyang City to the east, Handan City to the north, and Hebi and Xinxiang Cities to the south. It lies between 35°12′ and 36°22′ north latitude and 113°37′ and 114°58′ east longitude, covering a total area of 7,413 square kilometers. As of May 2023, Anyang City administers 4 districts, 4 counties, and 1 county-level city. As of the end of 2024, Anyang City had a resident population of 5.394 million. The Anyang dialect belongs to the Jin dialect and Central Plains Mandarin.

Anyang City has a warm temperate continental monsoon climate. Its terrain slopes from west to east, with the western part being the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountains and the eastern part belonging to the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. It spans the Haihe and Yellow River basins. The name Anyang originated in the late Warring States period. From 401 AD (the fourth year of the Tianxing era of the Northern Wei Dynasty) to the Song Dynasty, Anyang was the seat of Xiangzhou. In 1191 AD (the second year of the Mingchang era of the Jin Dynasty), Xiangzhou was upgraded to Zhangde Prefecture. The Yuan Dynasty renamed it Zhangde Circuit, and the Ming and Qing Dynasties retained Zhangde Prefecture. In 1913 (the second year of the Republic of China), Zhangde Prefecture was abolished. On November 30, 1952, Pingyuan Province was abolished, and Anyang City was incorporated into Henan Province, where it is now a prefecture-level city.

Anyang is one of China's eight ancient capitals, a national historical and cultural city, the hometown of oracle bone inscriptions, the birthplace of the Book of Changes (I Ching), and one of the centers of Chinese civilization, known as the "Capital of Seven Dynasties." As of 2025, Anyang has two World Cultural Heritage sites, 26 national-level cultural relics protection units, and 38 A-level tourist attractions.

Anyang City is located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development zone and is one of the core cities in Henan Province's Yellow River Basin ecological protection and high-quality development area. It is an important regional central city supported by Henan Province and one of Henan's heavy industrial bases. It has been incorporated into the Central Plains Economic Zone and has become an important node radiating and driving the national strategies of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, Henan's "Three Zones and One Cluster" development strategy, and the Bohai Rim Economic Circle. In 2024, Anyang City achieved a GDP of 267.21 billion yuan, an increase of 4.6% over the previous year.
