Aletai History & Culture

The Altay region has a long history, with human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. Historically, it formed the westward extension of the Mobei Steppe, situated between the steppe belts of eastern and central Asia. For a long time, it formed a relatively integrated political unit along with the western Mongolian Plateau, the upper reaches of the Yenisei and Ob rivers, and the northern foothills of the Tarbagatai Mountains. It served as a pathway for nomadic peoples from northern China to migrate eastward and as a habitat for survival and competition.

The Altay region is the only region in northwest China that borders Russia. It is an important node city for the northern route of the Silk Road Economic Belt and Xinjiang's participation in the construction of the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor. It has three national land ports. It is a relatively water-rich area in Xinjiang and is known as the "water tower" of northern Xinjiang. It is one of the six major forest areas in China and has been designated by the State Council as a water conservation-type mountain grassland ecological functional area. It is known as the "gold mountain and silver water". It is the birthplace of human skiing and the snow capital of China.

Ayts is one of the ancient Kazakh festivals. Every autumn, the Aken, known for their singing and dancing skills, gather together, embracing their dombras, improvising poems and singing. The gathering of nomads, drawn by the sight of the festival, creates a festive atmosphere, singing and dancing. Ayts is a traditional Kazakh festival in the Altay region and one of the most lively festivals of the year.
