Zhangzhou has a humid subtropical monsoon climate, protected from cold fronts by high mountains to the north and moderated by the ocean to the south. Located at a relatively low latitude, Zhangzhou lies near the Tropic of Cancer, enjoying a warm climate with abundant rainfall, mild winters and mild summers. However, rainfall varies significantly from year to year and from season to season. Droughts and floods alternate, and the geographical distribution is uneven, with more rainfall in mountainous areas and less along the coast. Typhoons are frequent in summer, bringing both rainfall and floods and storm surges. As of 2021, Zhangzhou boasts an average temperature of 23°C, 2,035 hours of sunshine per year, abundant rainfall, an average annual relative humidity of 73.0%, and an average rainfall of approximately 1,400 mm, making it a natural "hothouse."
