Zhangye Buddha Temple located in the downtown area of Zhangye City, was built during the Yongan period of the Western Xia Dynasty, more than 900 years ago. It is one of the landmark attractions of Zhangye. The existing area is small, about 200 meters deep and 100 meters wide.

Zhangye Buddha Temple is famous for a very large indoor clay reclining Buddha in China enshrined in the temple. The reclining Buddha is shaped according to the image of Buddha Shakyamuni at the time of Nirvana, the Buddha body is 34.5 meters long and 7.5 meters wide at the shoulder, just one finger of the Big Buddha can lie down flat for a person, and one ear can accommodate 10 people sitting side by side, which is quite grand in scale as well.
