Xuzhou History & Culture

In primitive society, during the reign of Emperor Yao, Peng Zu founded the Peng State, the earliest city in Jiangsu Province. Historically, Xuzhou was one of the Nine Provinces of China. Since ancient times, it has been the key to the north, the gateway to the south, a battleground for military strategists, and a hub for merchants. It was also the political, economic, and cultural center of the Huaihai region. With over 6,000 years of civilization and 2,600 years of city history, Xuzhou is known as the hometown of emperors, with the saying "nine dynasties of emperors were born in Xuzhou." Xuzhou is the birthplace of Han culture, known as the "hometown of Peng Zu, the hometown of Liu Bang, and the former capital of Xiang Yu." Due to its extensive cultural heritage, scenic spots, and rich historical heritage, it is also known as the "Athens of the East."
