Chongwu Ancient City is located on the southeast coast of Huian County, adjacent to the Taiwan Strait. It was built by Zhou Dexing, Marquis of Jiangxia, in the 20th year of the Ming Hongwu reign (1387) to resist Japanese pirates. But so far, only a section of the ancient city wall remains, so in order to enhance the visibility of the scenic area, the ancient city has implanted Huian's unique art - stone carving.
Overall, there are three major highlights of Chongwu Ancient City: the ancient city walls, stone carvings, and the rocky reefs by the sea.
The houses in Chongwu Ancient City were not built with red bricks but with large square stones, hence it is also called Stone City. Although it is old, the city walls made of stone are still very intact. There are several villages within the city wall, all built with stone houses. Free admission within the ancient city walls, only the section from the city walls to the seaside is charged. The residential areas under these city walls still inhabited the early inhabitants of Chongwu, who were descendants of the anti Japanese army at that time.
You can climb up the old city wall and take a walk. Standing at the lighthouse on a high ground, the outline of the city wall of the entire ancient military strategic location can be clearly seen, with a broad view that allows for a panoramic view of the entire sea, as well as the graceful silhouette of the statue of Mazu, the goddess of the sea.
Not to mention stone carvings, Huian gives people the impression of Huian women and stone carvings, and stone carvings can be seen everywhere here. For example, there are soldiers from the Water Margin; There are animals such as black cats and white cats; There are characters and images from Journey to the West. Although the connection between the stone carving content and the ancient city cannot be seen, it feels quite commercialized. However, taking photos and appreciating the stone carving is still good.
Of course, the most beautiful place may still be the seaside. There are rocks and reefs by the seaside, but there are also many shells on the beach. It feels great to take a walk by the seaside, as you can stroll along the coastline to the small sandy beach in the middle. During low tide, you can also catch small shrimp and crabs. There are also barbecue restaurants on the shore where you can eat barbecue.
There are places around the scenic area that sell shadow sculptures, which can be bought as souvenirs. There are two types: machine carving and hand carving, with different prices.
