Kaifeng, abbreviated as "Bian," was historically known as Daliang, Bianzhou, Bianliang, Bianjing, and Dongjing. It is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province and was the former capital of Henan. Located in eastern Henan, on the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, in the heart of the Central Plains and on the banks of the Yellow River, it is adjacent to Zhengzhou. It covers a total area of 6,116.59 square kilometers and, as of the end of 2024, administered 5 districts and 4 counties, with a resident population of 4.698 million.
In the 8th century BC, during the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Zhuang of Zheng built a city in Gucheng Village near Zhuxian Town, south of present-day Kaifeng, to garrison troops and store grain. He named it "Qifeng," meaning "to open up and expand the territory." In the first year of the Qianyuan era of the Western Han Dynasty (156 BC), Emperor Jing of the Western Han Dynasty ascended the throne. To avoid using the taboo name of Emperor Jing, Liu Qi, he changed "Qi" to "Kai," and "Qifeng" was renamed "Kaifeng." This is the origin of the city name "Kaifeng."
