Dalian Overview


Dalian, also known as the Coastal City and the Romantic City, is a prefecture-level city, sub-provincial city, independently planned municipality, and megacity under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province, China. Located at the southernmost tip of Northeast China, it is surrounded by the sea on three sides: the Yellow Sea to the east, the Bohai Sea to the west, the Shandong Peninsula to the south, and the Northeast Plain to the north. Located in the warm temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, it has a temperate monsoon climate with maritime characteristics. It covers a total area of 12,574 square kilometers. As of June 2023, Dalian governs seven districts, one county, and administers two county-level cities. By the end of 2024, Dalian's permanent population was 7.544 million.
