Snake Island

Snake Island is located on the sea surface of Bohai Bay in the northwest corner of Lushunkou District, Dalian City. It faces Dongtuzi Village in Lushun across the sea and is 7 nautical miles away from the land. The sea depth around Snake Island is about 30 meters, the island is about 1500 meters long and 800 meters wide, with a total area of 1.2 square kilometers. At present, there are more than 18000 single species of black browed pit vipers living on the island, which can be called the kingdom of pit vipers.

Snake Island is one of China's unique islands and a nature reserve. Its terrain is high in the southwest and low in the northeast, resembling abalone shells, with a total of seven mountain ridges and eight gullies. The main peak has an elevation of 216.9 meters and is surrounded by cliffs and rocks on all sides, except for a pebble beach in the southeast corner. The island has steep slopes and deep ravines, deep soil layers, loose structure, and many natural rock fissures and caves, making it a good environment for the viper to live and thrive. There are over 200 species of plants thriving throughout the island. Forest clusters, stone caves, mountain ridges, and shady valleys are all places where black browed pit vipers roam. The black browed pit viper has two differences from other types of snakes: one is summer sleep, and the other is viviparous. It is said that after one conception, it only gives birth to one child per year, which takes several years to complete. Spring and autumn are the feeding seasons for pit vipers, and a large number of migratory birds become prey for snakes.

Before going to Snake Island, you can first visit the Snake Island Natural Museum to learn about the situation of Snake Island and the ecology of pit vipers. In order to be safe, the island landing must be carried out in an organized way, and the formalities need to be handled at the Laotieshan Nature Reserve Management Office. Landing on the island is subject to various factors such as season, weather, and guidance, and there is a certain degree of danger involved. It is not always possible to visit the island at any time.
