Chengde City, also known as "Hot River," is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province. It is a key node in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, a water conservation zone in the region, a national demonstration zone for ecological civilization, a national innovation demonstration zone for the Sustainable Development Agenda, a national historic and cultural city, and an international ecotourism city. As of 2024, the city will comprise three urban districts, four counties, three autonomous counties, and administer one county-level city. It has a total area of 39,511.89 square kilometers and a permanent population of 3.2857 million.
Chengde City is located in northeastern Hebei Province, between 40°12′ and 42°37′ north latitude and 115°54′ and 119°15′ east longitude. It lies in the transition zone between North China and Northeast China, close to Beijing and Tianjin, and backed by Inner Mongolia and Liaoning. Within Hebei Province, it borders the coastal cities of Qinhuangdao and Tangshan, as well as Zhangjiakou. To the north, it borders Chifeng City and Xilinguole League in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The city spans 269 kilometers from north to south and 280 kilometers from west to east. Its administrative area covers 39,511.89 square kilometers, accounting for 21.19% of Hebei Province's total area. Chengde City is 435 kilometers from Shijiazhuang and 225 kilometers from Beijing.
Topography: Chengde City boasts a complex terrain, crisscrossed by mountains and crisscrossed by rivers. The terrain slopes northward, with the northern portion bordering the southeastern edge of the Inner Mongolia Plateau, the central portion comprising low-lying mountains, and the southern portion encompassing the Yanshan Mountains. Chengde City's elevation ranges from 200 to 1,200 meters, with an average elevation of 350 meters. Its highest peak, Wuling Mountain, stands at 2,118 meters. The mountains surrounding the city are a Danxia landform, forming ten unique scenic spots, including the Qingchui Peak, Luohan Mountain, Tianqiao Mountain, and Shuangta Mountain.
