Urumqi Overview


Urumqi (Uyghur: ئۈرۈمچى شەھىرى‎, English: Urumqi City), is a prefecture-level city and capital city under the jurisdiction of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Commonly known as Urumqi, formerly called Dihua, it is located in Northwest China, central Xinjiang, in the heart of the Eurasian continent, between 86°37'33"~88°58'24" east longitude and 42°45'32"~44°08'00" north latitude. Situated on the northern foothills of the northern Tianshan Mountains and the southern edge of the Junggar Basin, it is deep inland and has a mid-latitude continental arid climate. As of April 2024, the city administers 7 districts and 1 county, covering a total area of 13,800 square kilometers. As of the end of 2024, the city's permanent resident population was 4,128,400. Languages spoken include Mandarin, Uyghur, and Kazakh.
