Mogao Grottoes, also known as Mogao Caves of the Thousand Buddhas,form a system of 492 temples about 25 km southeast of the center of Dunhuang. Mogao Grottoes Tourism Area is an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in northwest China's Gansu province.

The caves may also be known as the Dunhuang Caves, which contain some of the most excellent examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1000 years. As the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes, Mogao Grottoes, along with Luoyang Longmen Grottoes and Dtong Yungang Grottoes, is one of the three famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites in China.
Notice for Visiting Mogao Grottoes
1、 The visiting mode of Mogao Grottoes implements a system of online real name reservation and ticket inspection, and in accordance with the relevant requirements of the Tourism Law of the People's Republic of China, implements a maximum daily tourist carrying capacity limit, with a daily limit of 6000 online reservation tickets sold. Emergency plans for large passenger flows will be activated in a timely manner during the peak tourism season.
2、 Appointment and ticket purchase
1. Tourists can book tickets one month in advance through the following methods: log in to the Mogao Grottoes visit reservation website (www.mgk. org. cn) to book tickets.
2. After successfully purchasing tickets, please go to the ticket office with your reservation order number and valid identification to handle the ticketing process.
3. When handling the real name ticketing business for group reservation tickets, travel agencies must bring the original group acceptance plan associated with the reservation ticket order and the original ID card of the actual visitor to the Mogao Grottoes reservation ticketing center in Dunhuang city to process the ticket issuance.

3、 Emergency visit
1. Dunhuang Academy will timely activate the emergency visit plan to cope with the huge passenger flow. The emergency visit plan is planned to be launched every single day in July and every two days in August. In September, emergency visits will be conducted for large groups of over 100 people from travel agencies, with no restrictions on single or double days.
On emergency reception days, a daily limit of 12000 emergency tickets can be sold, and emergency tickets can be pre ordered one day in advance. Holding emergency tickets allows visitors to visit four large classic caves in the Mogao Grottoes, as well as the Dunhuang Academy History Exhibition Hall and the Dunhuang Grottoes Protection and Research Exhibition Center.
3. Emergency visits shall implement a real name ticket purchase system and a real name ticket verification admission system. When purchasing tickets and visiting, valid personal identification documents must be carried, and only those who match the ticket, certificate, and person can be admitted to the visit.
4. The emergency reception day is divided into four visiting periods throughout the day. Tourists need to arrive at the emergency bus area of the Mogao Grottoes Digital Display Center according to the visiting time displayed on the emergency ticket and take a bus to visit the Mogao Grottoes area.
