The Hongmao City Historic Site Area broadly refers to three buildings in Danshui, including the main building of Hongmao City, the British Consulate, and the South Gate. It is a historically significant building in Danshui and a well-known historical site in the area.
The main building of Hongmao City has undergone several renovations by different users such as Spain, the Netherlands, the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and Britain. The preserved ancient building has a square pattern, deep foundation, thick walls, and a masonry method of external stones and internal bricks that is not afraid of artillery fire. There are four rooms on the ground floor of Hongmao City, two of which were renovated by the British and used as prisons. In the late Qing Dynasty, all British criminals who committed crimes in northern Taiwan were imprisoned here.
The location of Hongmao City has a steep terrain, and many tourists climb up to the observation deck to overlook the Danshui River. As the sun sets, the sea at the mouth of the Danshui River bathes in the sun, and the sky and water merge into one color. It has been known as the "sunset of the garrison" since its early years.
Walking out of the small path next to Hongmao City, you can see the ancient artillery area. To the right of the ancient artillery area is the British Consulate of the Former Qing Dynasty. The walls are made of clear red bricks, and the roof is made of Minnan red tiles. The facade of the first floor corridor is arched, and the facade of the second floor corridor is semi-circular. The interior furniture is well preserved, and the sofas, tea tables, and phonographs give people a feeling of time passing by.
The environment of Tamkang Middle School and Truth University near Hongmao City is quite good and also worth visiting. Travel Tips
