The Leiqiong Haikou Volcanic Group World Geopark is located in Shishan Town, Haikou City. The park has a diverse range of volcanoes, making it a natural geological museum. At the high point of the volcano, one can overlook the city of Haikou and the Qiongzhou Strait, with charming scenery.
Following the trail of the scenic area, you can see lush tropical plants along the way, as well as landscapes left behind by volcanic eruptions such as basalt and lava flows. There is also a volcanic stone culture park, showcasing village gates, stone mills, bowls, basins, tables, sugarcane makers, and more made of volcanic stones from over 2000 years ago in the volcanic area. Being immersed in it feels like returning to the Stone Age.
At the end of the trail is the Temple of the Volcano, with a horizontal stele of "Mountain Matching Heaven" and stone tablets engraved with "Great King God", "Earth God", and "Yingzhu God". There are 199 steps up the slope, where 99 represents the Double Ninth Sun and 100 means walking through this volcano can lead to a hundred years of life.
Further up is Ma'anling Crater, one of the well preserved extinct craters in the world, the middle depression. The two protruding peaks in the north and south are called Fenglu Ridge and Baozi Ridge, which look like a huge saddle from afar, hence the name of Ma'anling.
There are 5 observation points along the mountain trail, where you can enjoy the view of the volcano crater. Among them, the Ma'anling volcanic crater is the highest point of Haikou, with an altitude of 222.8 meters. When the weather is clear, the view is very good, and many tourists take photos here as souvenirs. Another noteworthy observation point is the Front Vermilion Bird (Observing Haikou) Observation Deck, from which you can enjoy a distant view of the blue sea and sky in the Qiongzhou Strait, and see the towering skyscrapers of Haikou city, like peacocks spreading their feathers; Looking south, there are volcanic clusters covered in tropical rainforests, with enchanting scenery.
In addition to enjoying the view around the crater, you can also follow the trail to enter the bottom of the Fengluling volcano, which is shaped like a big pot and is said to accommodate tens of thousands of people. The fire pit is very cool and has many plants, making it a natural oxygen bar. At the same time, you can also see relics of volcanic eruptions such as volcanic slag, lava cakes, and volcanic bombs.
