Lotus seeds are produced in Hunan, Hubei, Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi. Xiangtan lotus from Hunan's Xiangtan, Jianning lotus from Fujian, and Xuanping lotus from Zhejiang are known as China's three major lotus seeds. Xiangtan, located in the east-central part of Hunan Province, on the lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River, enjoys a humid climate with distinct four seasons, an average annual temperature of around 17°C, and abundant sunshine and rainfall, creating favorable climatic conditions for its production. Xianglian lotus, known for its high protein, low fat, and delicious taste, is known as "China's No. 1 Lotus Seed."

Hunan lotus varieties include Cunsanlian lotus and Furonglian and Taikonglian lotus, which are bred from the Cunsanlian lotus. Cunsanlian, a traditional Xiangtan lotus variety, is named for its three connected lotus seeds measuring one inch in length. These lotus seeds are round and uniform, with a creamy white flesh and delicate texture. When cooked, they melt in the mouth, leaving a fragrant aroma.

On May 24, 2010, the former General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine approved "Xianglian" as a geographical indication product.
