Hefei Overview


Hefei City, abbreviated as "Lu" or "He," and formerly known as Luzhou, Luyang, and Hefei, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital, and megacity under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province. Located in central Anhui Province, on the western wing of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, Hefei is surrounded by Chaohu Lake. It has a humid subtropical monsoon climate and boasts a topography encompassing hilly terrain, low mountainous remnants, and low-lying plains. The city covers a total area of 11,445 square kilometers. As of March 2025, Hefei governs four districts, four counties, and administers one county-level city. By the end of 2024, Hefei's permanent population was 10.02 million.

Hefei is a key central city in the Yangtze River Delta region, designated by the State Council as a national comprehensive transportation hub, a central advanced manufacturing base, a regional technological innovation hub, and an international air cargo distribution center. It is also the central city of the G60 Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, a strategic dual-node city for the Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, a comprehensive national science center, a member city of the World Science and Technology Cities Alliance, and a national pilot city for technological innovation. New display technologies, new energy vehicles, integrated circuits, advanced photovoltaics, and new energy storage are Hefei's leading industries.
