The former residence of Li Hongzhang is located in the bustling middle section of Huaihe Road Pedestrian Street in Hefei, and is a typical residential building in the late Qing Dynasty Jianghuai region. Li Hongzhang was born in Hefei and was a high-ranking military official in the late Qing Dynasty. His five brothers also held high positions. At that time, the Li family's residence was known as the "Half Street of the Li Mansion", but unfortunately now there are only a few rooms and the area is less than one twelfth of the original.
The exquisite wooden carvings in the former residence are awe inspiring, while the exhibitions about Li Hongzhang in various halls evoke mixed reviews and sighs about his life. The architecture of the former residence, from south to north, consists of the main entrance, front hall, central hall, and the Zouma Building (Miss Building). There is a "Life Exhibition of Li Hongzhang" in the front hall, which introduces Li Hongzhang's life through graphic and physical displays, including his "youth imperial examination, middle-aged military service, middle-aged frontier fiefdom, and later Westernization". The central hall, named Fushou Hall, is a place for receiving guests. It is decorated in the shape of a living room, with wooden furniture and beautiful patterns on every window. The east and west compartments of the central hall are study rooms. There is a "Li Hongzhang Ink Treasure Exhibition" in the hallway between the central hall and the Zoumalou, where you can appreciate Li Hongzhang's vigorous and powerful calligraphy. Zouma Building is the essence of the whole former residence. It is a "Hui" shaped wooden building. On the first floor, there is an exhibition of "Li Hongzhang and China Merchants". On the second floor, there are ladies' boudoirs. As soon as you enter the brothel, the embroidered bed, dressing table, and round stool upstairs are all made of rosewood. The embroidered bed is particularly precious and is said to be carved from a whole tree. The wooden carvings in the former residence are exquisite, with fine patterns on the door covers, beds, tables, and stools. The east end of the second floor is said to be the residence of Li Hongzhang's youngest daughter and Zhang Ailing's grandmother, Ju Duo. On the east side of the main building of the former residence is the exhibition hall, which is decorated with the exhibition "Huai Group and Modernization of China", introducing the Huai Army led by Li Hongzhang. It displays the armor, weapons, and five colored imperial edicts written in both Manchu and Han languages of the Huai Army at that time.
