Flame Mountain Scenic Area is located on the east side of the Lianhuo Expressway in Turpan City, about 30 kilometers away from the city center by car. It is a scenic area dominated by fiery red reddish brown sandstone landforms. This place was historically the location of the ancient kingdom of Gaochang, and according to legend, it is the location of the Flame Mountain where Tang Monk and his disciples borrowed banana fans to extinguish the fire in Journey to the West. It is a popular destination for many tourists visiting Turpan.
Flame Mountain Scenic Area is divided into two parts: underground and above ground. The underground part is a long corridor style exhibition hall, and the ceiling of the exhibition hall is set with sky like lighting fixtures, which is very distinctive. The above ground landscape consists of fiery red rocks and cliff landforms, which are very spectacular and suitable for photography. There are many sculptures with the theme of Journey to the West on the square on the ground, as well as a huge thermometer called the Golden Hoop Stick.
